New Music from Afrissippi !!

Today we have new music from Afrissippiâs new CD "Alliance." "Alliance" is the follow up CD to their successful 2005 debut CD Fulani Journey. If you are not familiar with Afrissippi you are in for a real treat. The bandâs leader, Guelel Kumba hails from Senegal, West Africa. He is of the Fulani tribe and moved to Oxford Mississippi a few years ago where he met several local blues musicians. They soon discovered that the traditional music of Guelelâs tribe blended perfectly with the Hill Country style of blues that the rest of the band had been playing all of their lives. The results of this musical fusion is a refreshing blend that they like to call World Boogie. It was produced by Grammy award winner Jimbo Mathus and recorded at his Delta Recording Service in Como Mississippi for Hill Country Records. Featuring Junior Kimbroughâs Chulahoma Juke Band, the band consists of Guelel Kumba on vocals and acoustic guitar, Eric Deaton on electric guitar, Kinney Kimbrough on drums, Papa Assane Mâbaye on percussion, and Justin Showah on bass with guest trombonist Jeff Callaway. Today we have the great Bobby Rush, recorded live in Ocean Springs, MS on July 8th, 2007. In this beautiful recording by taper jedi Kevin Byram, we hear the essence of the blues: one man, one electric guitar (ok, so not really unplugged), one harmonica and a whole lot of music. This legendary story teller and song writer has been an important part of the blues scene since 1951. SMMS is proud to bring you 42 minutes of Bobby Rush on this, our second anniversary. T-Bone Pruitt Live at the Shed Feb 17th, 2007

Today we have Tommie T-Bone Pruitt of Ellisville recorded this past February at The Shed BBQ in Ocean Springs. Thanks to Butch Johnson and congrats to The Shed for winning all those awards at the Memphis In May BBQ competition this month.

It's shaping up to be a big year for Tommie. On March 17th, T-bone and the boys were recorded by a visiting Croatian film crew for inclusion in a documentary for Croatian Public Television about volunteerism in the USA (no, it wasn't Borat ;o)

Thanks to Scott Barretta for his effort in coming to Laurel to interview Tommie and setting the whole thing up. Today, I've got Tha 2 Zigg Zaggs from their new CD Ridin' High. They are joined on one track by Hattiesburg rapper Afroman. They have been his band for several years and their new CD combines funk and rap. Several other local rappers were pressed into service including Poboy, Strainj and Fatsoe.

Also we'll hear from punk band Hoodcrowd. A staple in the Hattiesburg music for many years, their best known song "Bought a Bag on my Credit Card" is a local classic.

Rap, funk and punk! Truely a South Mississippi Music Sampler.

Did you know that you can add SMMS to your homepage? If you have a home(start)page that supports XML/RSS content, like My.Yahoo.com, you can right click on one of the buttons to the left under "Syndication" and select "Copy Shortcut". (select the first button if you want both feeds carried)Then on your homepage select "Add Content" and then select "Add RSS by URL". Right click on the box and select "Paste". Click on the ADD button and you're done! You can edit the properties later to include posts older than one week. Any post that contains a podcast will have a "Listen" button under the title. What could be easier?

I had a great time last night playing Harmonica with Thomas Jackson and Michael Stokes at Nicks Ice House. Thomas is a great singer songerwriter and blows a mean harp, too. Michael plays standup bass with several bands including the Molotov Trio. I appreciate their invitation to play, it gave me a chance to try out my new rig in public: a Tube Works RT2100 amp and Shure BG6.1 mic. I'm missing the Delta Blues Festival as I write this. It seems that fate conspired to keep me in Hattiesburg. Oh well, the Lucky Pickles are playing tonight at Nick's Ice House and I am playing harmonica with them which I haven't done much lately. I just left tailgating at USM. There was a big crowd there. I think everyone just wants to forget about the hurricane for a little while and do something to feel normal. Last night I saw T-bone Pruitt at the Walnut Circle Grill. I miss Dave Morgan their harmonica player. He moved to Chicago recently.
